Bliss Knitters at Haslewey
At Haslewey, we are privileged to support many wonderful groups and charities, but few have a story as inspiring as that of the Bliss Knitters.
Led by the remarkable Dianne Bennett, this dedicated group of volunteers meets regularly at Haslewey Community Centre to sort, collect and distribute hand-knitted items for premature and sick babies across the country.
Dianne's journey with Bliss began over forty years ago following the premature birth of her children. After experiencing the heartbreak of losing her baby son, Sam, and witnessing the extraordinary care given to her daughter, Carys, who spent thirteen weeks in neonatal care, Dianne felt compelled to give something back. What started as a personal mission of gratitude has grown into a lifetime of service, compassion and support for families facing some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
Today, at the age of 80, Dianne continues to coordinate an incredible network of more than 670 volunteer knitters. Together they lovingly create blankets, tiny hats, cardigans, booties, bonding squares, Christmas stockings and comfort items for babies receiving specialist care in neonatal units.
Every stitch is made with care, kindness and hope.
Many of the volunteers have personal connections to premature babies, while others simply want to use their knitting skills to make a difference. Together they form a supportive and caring community whose generosity reaches thousands of families every year.
In December 2025 alone, the group produced around 9,000 handmade items, helping babies and their families in neonatal units throughout the South East and beyond.
Could You Help?
The Bliss Knitters are always delighted to welcome new volunteers.
Whether you are an experienced knitter or simply looking for a meaningful way to help others, your support could make a real difference to a family with a premature or sick baby.
Patterns are provided, and volunteers can help by:
-
Knitting blankets, hats, cardigans, booties and bonding squares
-
Donating wool
-
Helping with deliveries and collections
-
Supporting fundraising efforts
No contribution is too small. Every knitted item is a gesture of love and support for families who need it most.
